Windows can be activated with either a 25-character product key or a digital license. The correct way to locate proof of licensing depends on how Windows was purchased and installed.
Product key versus digital license
A Windows product key contains 25 characters in five groups. A digital license activates Windows without requiring you to type a visible key. Microsoft explains that many Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations use a digital license linked to the device and, optionally, a Microsoft account.
Where to look for a legitimate Windows key
- New computer: the key may be embedded in firmware, supplied in the packaging or shown on a Certificate of Authenticity.
- Authorized digital purchase: check the order confirmation, account order history or retailer’s digital locker.
- Physical copy: inspect the card or label inside the original packaging.
- Microsoft Store upgrade: the device may receive a digital license rather than a traditional key.
Follow Microsoft’s official Find your Windows product key guidance. Never publish a complete key in a forum, review, screenshot or support ticket.
Check activation in Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open System.
- Select Activation.
- Read the message next to Activation status.
The page may state that Windows is activated, activated with a digital license, or activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
Check activation in Windows 10
Open Settings → Update & Security → Activation. Confirm both the activation state and the installed edition. A key for Pro will not activate an installation that is configured as a different incompatible edition without the appropriate edition-change process.
Useful command-line checks
Advanced users can open Command Prompt as administrator and use slmgr /xpr to display whether activation is permanent or has an expiration. This command checks activation status; it does not reveal a complete retail product key.
What to do when Windows is not activated
- Confirm internet access, date, time and time zone.
- Verify that the installed Windows edition matches the license.
- Enter the key through the official Activation settings page.
- Use the Activation troubleshooter after significant hardware changes.
- Link a legitimate digital license to a Microsoft account when appropriate.
- Contact the seller with the order number if a recently purchased key is rejected.
Microsoft’s Windows activation guide explains the available activation states and troubleshooting path.
Avoid unsafe key-finder downloads
Do not download unknown “key finder” utilities from random websites. Such tools can be bundled with unwanted software or expose private information. Start with Windows Settings, the original purchase record and Microsoft support resources.
Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer a Windows license?
Transfer rights depend on the license type and terms. Retail and OEM licenses can have different restrictions. Review the applicable agreement before moving a license to another computer.
Why does my computer show a generic key?
Windows may display a generic installation key while activation is provided by a digital license. The Activation page is the authoritative place to check status.
Can the same key activate multiple PCs?
Only when the license terms explicitly allow multiple devices. A standard single-device license should not be reused beyond its permitted activation.
